The property was acquired in 1992 for conservation and reforestation. Today, Sachatamia is an important private ecological reserve consisting of more than 750 acres (300 hectares). Most of it is primary and secondary forest with some reforested areas and others being reforested. There are five rivers with pristine waters in the reserve.

Its location is special: Elevation 1,500 to 1,750 meters (4,920 to 5,742 feet) above sea level; Latitude 0 degrees, 1 minute, 36 seconds South; Longitude 78 degrees, 45 minutes, 34 seconds West; minimum temperature 64 degrees Fahrenheit, maximum 79 degrees Fahrenheit; in the “Andean Choco” with the Mindo-Nambillo protector forest, a zone with high biodiversity that recently obtained first place for the second time in the global bird count.
