Description of the area:
We are on the San Juan River and we practice real ecotourism, where nature, a rustic setting, and the elemental comforts needed in the middle of the wet tropical jungle of Nicaragua are combined. We are surrounded by abundant native plants and resident and seasonally migratory animals: a large number of birds, varieties of mammals, and many species of reptiles, among others. It’s a paradise for bird-watchers.
Our cabins have private baths and porches facing the river where you can see or hear otters, fish and more at night or mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, etc. during the day.
Some of the main activities you can pursue are tours in kayak or canoe, bicycling, horseback riding, hikes on the trails of our private wild reserve, fishing along the river bank, watching caimans at night, bird-watching, swimming from an island in front of the hotel; we offer fun tubing in the San Juan River currents, tours to the Indio-Maíz Reserve World Heritage Site, historic sites like El Castillo, visits to the remains of old steam boats used to take passengers to California during the Gold Rush, tours to the Solentiname Archipelago in Lake Nicaragua, the Los Guatusos Refuge, and more.

How to get there:
To reach Sábalos Lodge, you must first travel to San Carlos by plane (45 minutes from Managua), by boat, overland, or by boat from Costa Rica (Los Chiles, Caño Negro).
When you reach San Carlos, we can send you one of our launches to pick you up. You can also use the collective transport to take you to the hotel. If you use our launches, you will have a chance to stop the boat to enjoy a troop of monkeys or a flock of exotic birds that might appear during the trip.
Making a difference:
We work hard for the health of the neighboring communities and we coordinate support for four health centers for the communities of El Castillo, Boca de Sábalos, Buena Vista, and Las Maravillas. Our support consists of:
We also coordinate the supply of energy from solar panels for the health center in Las Maravillas and the installation of a well and plumbing for the village of Boca de Sabalos. We coordinate the construction of sanitary services for the Buena Vista Health Center, and more…
We are part of the Central American Green Initiative of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor and the Private Nature Reserve Network of Nicaragua.
We create jobs for an economically depressed area and we motivate and support the people to make handicrafts and do other activities to create other jobs that are linked to what we are doing directly at the hotel.
General rates:
Our rates vary from US$25 to US$60 per cabin per night.
