Description of the area:

Hacienda Tijax has 500 acres of land in the Fronteras region of Río Dulce, Izabal, very near the bridge that crosses the river. It is a stopover for those traveling the renowned Maya Route. Tijax has a beautiful subtropical moist forest, rooms by the river, private bungalows, and a marina. It is a very special place for making contact with nature. Nature-lovers will be pleasantly surprised on their hikes through the forest and trips along the waterways of the hacienda to find orchids, bromeliads, butterflies and other insects, more than 70 species of trees and 330 species of birds documented for the site including falcons, owls, kingfishers, hummingbirds, and others. There are many things to do in and around Hacienda Tijax, such as horseback-riding, swimming or sailing.

From Tijax you can visit the Chocón Machacas Biotope, a manatee nature reserve, Lake Izabal, the legendary castle of San Felipe de Lara Quirigua, Punta de Manbique, El Boquerón, La Finca Paraíso, and many other sites.

We have several lodging options depending on your needs. We serve excellent food in our restaurant; the menu includes vegetarian dishes, Italian pastas, and a variety of seafoods. The bar offers a wide variety of cocktails. The setting is unique.

How to get there:

We are in Fronteras, Izabal, near the bridge over the Río Dulce.

We can be reached by water or overland. There is continuous aquatic transportation to and from Fronteras and the city center is only a 20-minute walk.

If you arrive in a car you can leave it at the park by the Tijax Express office. If the car has four-wheel drive you can drive to Hacienda Tijax. The entrance is on the right side of the highway, approximately 1 mile after the bridge. There are signs to guide you.

Transportation service alternatives include:

  • From Guatemala City: There are three large bus companies that go to Fronteras from Guatemala; Litegua and Fuente Del Norte are the most economical (~US$ 7.00 per person) and the Línea Dorada, which has a line of luxury buses (~ US$ 20 per person). Another option is to use a private tour operator service (~ US$ 30 per person). The trip is approximately 5 hours. For more información about transportation contact Litegua, Línea Dorada, Grayline or Autobuses del Norte.

  • From Antigua: You can use Atitrans transportation; they pick you up at your hotel and leave you at Tijax Express in Fronteras (~ US$ 30 per person). There are buses to Guatemala City from there you can go on to Río Dulce.

  • From Puerto Barrios: You can take any bus that goes on the Atlántic highway and get off in La Ruidosa; from there you can take any local bus to Fronteras. The trip is approximately one hour. Contact Oguatours or Transportes el Chato.

  • From Flores, Peten: There are several bus companies that go to Fronteras, such as Fuente Del Norte and Línea Dorada. The trip takes approximately 4 hours.

  • From Livingston: At Livingston’s municipal dock you can take a boat to the Tijax Express office in Fronteras. The trip takes approximately one hour.
  • Making a difference:

We are dedicated to conservation, ecotourism, and adventure.

Hacienda Tijax was an old cattle ranch; today it is a tourism operation with a hotel, marina, and an ecological reserve. We have roads and trails that were established with the help of experienced biologists and archeologists where guests can enjoy the beauty of the subtropical forest and the plants and animals of Guatemala’s Caribbean wetlands, learn about the trees and some medicinal plants, appreciate the bird sanctuary, and more.

We have rubber tree and teak plantations, businesses that are subjected to international criteria for environmental conservation.

We support people who come to work in ecological projects at Rió Dulce or in Guatemala.

We provide the correct codes of conduct for each of the different sites where we take our clients.

We comply with all cleaner production system standards.

Our employees are from the community.
