Description of the area:

Casa Calateas is in the community of Carbón 2 in Limón province, Talamanca, Costa Rica.

Casa Calateas has an impressive view of the Talamanca region. From our trails you will appreciate the treasures of the Caribbean coast from Punta Mona to Cahuita National Park and the beautiful tropical forests of Talamanca. From our observation platforms you can easily admire migrating raptors – an incredible phenomenon to see (September-January). Talamanca has been classified as the third best place for watching this natural marvel.

This is a strategic place for watching wildlife, because we have a private 212 acre (85 hectare) reserve and are very close to Cahuita National Park (which combines forest with beautiful beaches), Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, and Hitoy Cerere Biological Reserve. The community of Carbón 2 itself has a large number of rivers and forests.

Casa Calateas gives you a chance to become acquainted with three different cultures: Afro-Caribbean, indigenous people and campesino (rural farmer) groups.

Choosing Casa Calateas is great for those who want to know more about the great biological and cultural diversity of Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean area in a comfortable, tranquil and inviting setting.

Making a difference:

Casa Calateas is a rural community lodge belonging to the Carbón 2 Association for Conservation and Development, a farming organization in the community of Carbón 2 de Cahuita. Our work is aimed at the sustainable management of nature and the improvement of the socioeconomic conditions of the local population. We have dedicated an area of 207 acres (84 ha.) to conservation as a private reserve and we are conducting environmental education for children and youth in the community. We also participate in sustainable production activities with farmers in the community.

We are members of the Costa Rican Rural Community Tourism Association (ACTUAR), which is made up of more than 20 rural community tourism enterprises throughout Costa Rica.
