Description of the area:
We are in the Quebradas region of San Isidro de Pérez Zeledón, very near the city of San Isidro, Chirripó mountain, the Talamanca mountain range, and some of the beautiful beaches of the Pacific coast, such as Dominical, Uvita, and the city of Quepos with its famous Manuel Antonio National Park. There are tours of the mountains and the Quebradas River Basin at the Las Quebradas Biological Center.
Visitors stay in the homes of 16 families that are participating and have an opportunity to share life with Costa Rican families in a true cultural exchange.
Usually, our visitors also carry out some kind of volunteer work such as:
Available activities:
Bird watching
Eco / nature / wildlife
Educational, research, volunteering
Spiritual / religious
Walking / hiking
Visits to conservation projects
How to get there:
You can visit us year-round, in a regular car during the dry season but a four-wheel drive vehicle is needed when it is rainy.
Making a difference:
The Women’s Association of Quebradas (ASOFEQUE) was formed to address the need to house foreign volunteers that were coming to help conserve the Quebradas River Basin. This initiative began in the early 1990s and obtained its legal status on October 21, 2004.
The host families and other organized groups of the Quebradas community now have an alternative source of income. Sixteen host families participate, providing a home environment for visitors to experience Costa Rican culture (meals, social activities, learning Spanish and the possibility of making a beautiful friendship with members of the family and the community).
We have learned to listen and learn from one another in the women’s group. We are now capable of dealing with larger projects.
