Description of the area:

Surrounded by 870 acre (352-hectare) of forest and only about 1.5 miles from Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica is the Arenal Observatory Lodge. The hotel is situated at the southern base of the volcano and its rooms have spectacular views of the lake and the volcano, giving the visitor an opportunity to admire one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Built on a hill above the Agua Caliente River and Danta Creek, Arenal Observatory Lodge is a safe place for your enjoyment because the terrain does not allow lava flows to ascend the flanks of the hill. The zone is classified as low risk. Since March of 2007, the lava flows have moved to the southwest side of the volcano and views are spectacular from the lodge.

The hotel’s grounds include 270 acres (110 hectares) of incredible natural rain forest and 400 acres (162 hectares) undergoing reforestation. They are covered with trails where you can enjoy hikes, birdwatching and wildlife spotting.

Due to its location, the Arenal Observatory Lodge can serve as a base for visits to other places of interest: Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge, Cavernas de Venado, Monteverde Cloud Forest, river rapids, kayaking, hanging bridges, canopy tours, fishing, hot springs, or the various beaches of Guanacaste.

How to get there:

Upon arriving in La Fortuna de San Carlos, continue on the highway to Arenal Volcano National Park. Just before reaching Arenal Lake you will come to a crossroads on the left with a gravel road that goes to the National Park entrance; continue on this road for 5.5 miles until you reach the hotel. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended during the rainy season.

Making a difference:

Arenal Observatory Lodge is located within the Arenal Conservation Area, a zone of primary or unaltered forests with uncontaminated rivers and streams. We try to maintain our surroundings and we are careful with our business operating practices: we watch out for cases of environmental alteration and contamination, we promote the efficient use of resources, we reduce the generation of wastes through recycling, and we use proper wastewater management.

The hotel helps the community indirectly by creating jobs (98% of the workers are local people).
